CE & YOW Workshop

February 23, 2019 – St. Andrew’s, Stittsville

Poster for CE & YOW Workshop

Over 20 people attended our workshop for Christian Educators & Youth Leaders. Samples of different curricula (curriculums?) were there for people to look through, and Emily Hill, the Education Program Coordinator from National Office and workshop facilitator, talked about them in her presentation, but they weren’t the main focus of the workshop.

Most of the workshop focused on how important they were in shaping people’s faith.

As we introduced ourselves, we also shared memories of people who had influenced our faith. Most of the time, it was Sunday School teachers, or music, or people in the church. What we discovered by taking a fresh look at our own faith journey was how important relationships were.

That led to a discussion about what we needed to do to deepen our own relationship with Jesus so that we could nurture others without burning out. (You can also check out the Spiritual Growth for Leaders Page for resources).

Only then did we begin to consider curriculum. The key point being made:
What is the vision/goal you want to achieve with the children or youth?
Find a curriculum that matches that vision/goal.

If you know what you are trying to achieve, then it will be easier to select a curriculum and easier to know how you can modify it if you need to.

The three take-aways:
1. Teachers and leaders shape a child’s faith in so many ways- beyond the curriculum.
2. Take time for your own spiritual life and growth.
3. Decide on your vision /goals – i.e., what you what to accomplish – then pick a curriculum that matches your vision/goals.

Participants decided they wanted to keep in touch with each other afterwards. There’s talk about developing their own network. We’ll see what happens and I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks to Emily Hill for leading the workshop, and to St., Andrew’s, Stittsville for hosting.
